The 72-Hour Rule: Why Every Household Needs Three Days of Self-Reliance
By SurviveReady Staff
Emergency managers repeat the same advice after every major disaster: be ready to take care of yourself for at least 72 hours. Roads close, crews are stretched thin, and stores empty fast.
What 72 hours really means
Three days of water (3 gallons per person), food that needs no refrigeration, light, a way to get alerts, first aid and medication.
Start this weekend
- Fill water containers and date them.
- Pull together three days of meals you already eat.
- Put flashlights, batteries and a weather radio in one bin.
- Write down your family comms plan.
Three days is not the goal. It's the floor. Once you have it, you can build toward two weeks and beyond.
